Manchester City captain Kompany out for a month with groin injury

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has been ruled out of action for at least four weeks with a groin injury, the club has confirmed.

The centre-back pulled up in the second half of the 4-0 victory over Newcastle United on Monday and had to be substituted.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini has hinted the club could still strengthen before the transfer window closes but will not let the injury to Kompany dictate his transfer activity.

"I prefer the doctor has the final word on this but I think he will be out for at least one month," Pellegrini told reporters..

"If we do strengthen [at centre back] it will not just be because of Vincent Kompany’s injury. We have a very good squad and we see what happens.

"Today or tomorrow we will know exactly how long Vincent will be out for."

Arsenal open Di Maria talks with Real Madrid

Madrid have indicated in early discussions with the Gunners that they are willing to off-load Di Maria as they prepare to announce the world-record signing of Gareth Bale.

"Despite his stunning arrival to the Bernabeu, Di Maria has never felt the starting player he was supposed to be. Too many big-name stars in his position, a couple of long injuries and the irregular form he has shown in the last two seasons have put him on the Madrid departures list.

"Predominantly a left winger, the Argentina international has fantastic dribbling ability but Real's deals for Isco and, moreover, the imminent arrival of Gareth Bale, have opened the door to an exit.

"If he does join Arsenal, Di Maria would undoubtedly take a leading role in Wenger’s side, with the potential to play on both wings in support of Olivier Giroud." But Goal understands that Real chiefs have told Arsenal they will not sell French striker Karim Benzema, another target, unless they first secure a top-class replacement.

Given that there are only 10 days left in the window, it means Arsenal’s hopes of landing the France international in particular look slim – Benzema is Real’s only senior centre forward following Gonzalo Higuain’s sale to Napoli earlier this summer – but the move for Di Maria is believed to be more advanced.

Wenger's audacious approach for the attacking pair comes in a week in which Arsenal have made a series of shock moves for players who were not on their target list earlier in the window.

As reported by Goal, the Londoners made bids for Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye and Schalke right-back Atsuto Uchida on Monday, and also made an enquiry for Sevilla midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia.

Wenger also has his eye on Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and is weighing up a short-term contract offer for former Gunner Mathieu Flamini, who is training at London Colney after being released by AC Milan.

It is the search for marquee attacking talent that is Wenger's chief priority as he attempts to make use of the €116.5m transfer kitty at his disposal and turn Arsenal into genuine title contenders.

The Frenchman has turned his attention to Spain after becoming aware of Bale's impending move to Real, a deal that is expected to be completed for around €100m by the end of the week.

The Gunners have also still not given up hope of landing Luis Suarez, while they are also continuing to monitor the situation of Wayne Rooney, who is being openly pursued by Chelsea.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers admitted on Thursday that a bid this late in the window for Suarez "would be very difficult [to accept]", adding: "There might have been a point a few months ago where there was time to do it but, with 11 days to go, it would be difficult to replace him."

Fulham sign Parker from Tottenham

Fulham have confirmed they have completed the signing of Scott Parker from Tottenham.

The 32-year-old midfielder has decided to spurn the interest of recently relegated QPR to sign a three-year deal with Martin Jol's side, and joins for an undisclosed fee.

Fulham will be Parker's fifth London club, the England international having already enjoyed spells with Charlton, Chelsea, West Ham and Tottenham during a distinguished career.

“I’m delighted to be joining Fulham and I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates at training tomorrow morning," Parker told the club's official website.

Fulham is an established Premier League club and I look forward to trying to help the team progress even further over the next three years.

Arsenal launch triple swoop for Cabaye, Kondogbia & Uchida

Arsenal are ready to begin a late summer spending spree after launching a triple swoop for Yohan Cabaye, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Atsuto Uchida, Goalcan reveal.
The Gunners had a £10 million bid for Newcastle midfielder Cabaye rejected on Monday before turning their attention to Sevilla powerhouse Kondogbia.

Goal understands that Arsenal made an enquiry rather than a formal offer for the 20-year-old midfield anchorman and were told he would only be sold if the €20m buy-out clause in his contract is met.

It is believed that the London club are also waiting for a response from Schalke after making a €7m bid for Uchida, the Bundesliga club’s right-back.

The frenzy of offers has come on the back of Arsenal’s 3-1 opening-day Premier League defeat to Aston Villa and a summer in which they have failed to make a senior signing despite making bids for a string of marquee players including Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain, Marouane Fellaini and Luiz Gustavo.

Arsenal have long held an interest in Cabaye but the timing of the bid is likely to have incurred the wrath of Newcastle, given that the Frenchman is expected to start their league opener against Manchester City on Monday night.

Sevilla’s outspoken president Jose Maria del Nido has said that he would consider it an “attack” on his club if anyone tried to buy Kondogbia this summer but has admitted that the France international has a €20m (£17.2m) buy-out clause in his contract.

Kondogbia joined Sevilla from Lens for €3m 12 months ago and offers similar versatility to Luiz Gustavo, who rejected Arsenal to join Wolfsburg last week, in that he can fill in at centre-back and at left-back.

Goal revealed last week that Arsenal had targeted Japanese defender Uchida to provide defensive cover this season and be groomed as a long-term replacement for Sagna.

Wenger wants a right-back who can fit in with the Gunners’ playing style and be groomed to challenge Carl Jenkinson for the first-team slot if Sagna leaves when his contract expires next summer.

Arsene Wenger has taken action to reinforce a squad that is looking increasingly threadbare after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain became the latest senior player to face a long spell on the sidelines.

The England international had a scan on Monday on a serious knee injury sustained in the Villa defeat on Saturday, with Arsenal set to receive the results on Tuesday.

Wenger is already without Mikel Arteta, who is out for up to a month with a thigh injury picked up in training last week, and skipper Thomas Vermaelen, who will be missing until mid-October with a stress fracture of his back.

Southampton sign Osvaldo from Roma

Southampton have completed the signing of Pablo Osvaldo from Roma for an initial £12.8 million fee which could rise to £14.5m after bonuses.

The 27-year-old striker, who worked under Mauricio Pochettino At Espanyol, has signed a four-year deal with the Premier League club.

Osvaldo, an Argentine-born forward who has been capped nine times by Italy, scored 16 goals in 29 Serie A appearances last season.

Osvaldo is Southampton's third signing of the summer transfer window following the arrivals of Dejan Lovren from Lyon and Victor Wanyama from Celtic.

Pochettino's latest acquisiton could make his debut next Saturday in Southampton's Premier League fixture against Sunderland at St Mary's.

Ancelotti wrong over Casillas - Valdes

Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes believes Carlo Ancelotti was wrong to pick Diego Lopez over Iker Casillas for Real Madrid's opening day win over Betis.

Casillas had a hard time under former Blancos coach Jose Mourinho during the Portuguese's last season at the Santiago Bernabeu, which eventually resulted in the goalkeeper being benched for five months.

Lopez was brought in from Sevilla in January and was installed as the club's first choice keeper, a trend that continued on Sunday with Casillas left out of the side and Valdes has admitted his astonishment at the decision.

"I was surprised that Casillas was a substitute," the 31-year-old told El Mundo Deportivo.

"At the Confederations Cup he did quite well after a difficult personal situation and months without playing.

"I've seen Iker do the impossible, for me he is the best,

"I'm surprised by this decision, but it's not my club and I have not much to say about that.

"But he is the best. I would like to see him play more, it's a challenge for me to face him."

Barcelona are currently preparing for their trip to Atletico Madrid on August 21, while Ancelotti's men will face Granada five days later.
